I’d like to talk about the culture of Japan, which I’ve been curious about for a long time, mainly because of a colleague from Osaka I worked with a few years ago.

What I know is fairly limited, and a lot of it comes from films and from what my colleague told me. I know, for example, that there are many seasonal festivals, and that things like cherry blossom viewing in spring are a big part of social life. My colleague also explained how much attention is paid to small details, like the way gifts are wrapped – she said the wrapping can be almost as important as the gift itself.

I’d like to learn more in a first-hand way rather than just reading about it. Ideally, I’d spend a few weeks there, not as a typical tourist rushing between famous sights, but staying in one place, perhaps with a local family, so I could see everyday life. Before that, I’d like to learn some basic Japanese, because I think you miss a lot if you can’t understand even simple conversations.

As for why I’m interested, I think it’s because it seems to combine very old traditions with modern technology in a way that I find fascinating. And, of course, it’s easy to have a simplified picture of any country from films. Only when you actually spend time somewhere, I think, do you start to see how varied people really are. So partly I’d like to go to check how many of my assumptions are wrong!
