Q: What do you like about the area you live in? Mainly the convenience. Within five minutes’ walk I’ve got a market, a pharmacy and a couple of decent cafés, so I hardly ever need the car at weekends. It’s quite bustling in the evenings, which I actually like – there’s always something going on – although I’d probably feel differently if I had small children trying to sleep.
Q: Is noise a problem where you live? To some extent. It’s not so much loud noise as a constant hum – traffic, air-conditioning units, the occasional karaoke session from a neighbour. Most of the time I tune it out, but when I’m working from home I sometimes put on headphones just to drown it out.

The place I’d like to talk about is the riverside road about ten minutes from where I live. On paper it should be one of the nicest spots in the city – there’s a wide river, some old trees and a view of the bridge at sunset – but at the moment it’s a bit of a wasted opportunity.
Right now, the road is basically a six-lane shortcut for motorbikes and lorries. The pavement on the river side is narrow and broken in places, and most of it is taken up by parked motorbikes, so if you actually want to walk along the water, you end up stepping into the traffic. There’s also an abandoned warehouse near the bridge that’s become a real eyesore – the windows are smashed and people dump rubbish behind it.
If I had my way, I’d pedestrianise the section closest to the river, or at least narrow it to two lanes and move the traffic onto the main road one block back. What I’d really like to see is a proper riverside path with benches, shade and maybe a few food stalls, so it becomes somewhere people go on purpose rather than just pass through. And the warehouse could be revamped as a small community space – a library, perhaps, or a place for local artists to work.
The main reason is that our part of the city has hardly any green space. Families with young children, elderly people who can’t travel far – they all need somewhere safe and pleasant to spend time outdoors. I suspect local businesses would benefit too, because people tend to spend more money in places where they actually want to linger.
