The three maps illustrate how Eastbank changed between 1996 and 2026.
Overall, the area was transformed from a rural settlement into a fully urbanised district. Almost all of its natural land disappeared, with the exception of a small park created in the final period, while transport links improved considerably. Only the main road and the river remained unchanged throughout.
In 1996, Eastbank consisted of farmland in the west, a village in the centre and a forest in the east, all lying to the north of the main road, with a river running along the southern edge. By 2011, the farmland had been replaced by a large housing estate, and the northern half of the forest had been cleared to make way for a factory. A bridge had also been built across the river, linking the area to the south bank.
The next fifteen years brought further development. The western part of the housing estate remained, but its eastern section was turned into a park. The village was demolished and a shopping centre built on the site, while the factory was converted into offices that expanded southwards over the remaining forest. Finally, a metro station opened on the main road.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to formally object to the proposed car park on the green space at the end of Willow Street (planning reference EB/2026/114).
Although it may look like an empty field, the land is used by a wide range of residents every day. Parents bring young children there after school, older residents walk there in the early morning, and a local running club meets on the site three evenings a week. For many households in the surrounding flats, it is the only outdoor space within walking distance.
While I recognise that parking near the shopping centre is limited, I believe the current plan would cause more problems than it solves. Firstly, it would remove one of the few green spaces in an already densely built area. Secondly, a car park of this size would be likely to increase traffic on Willow Street, which is narrow and used by many children walking to school.
A more appropriate solution might be to add extra levels to the existing multi-storey car park behind the shopping centre, which would increase capacity without the loss of public land.
I would urge the council to reconsider the proposal and would welcome the opportunity to discuss it at the next public meeting.
