- Clara
- So, the brief is to find out why so few staff at the company have joined the pension scheme. I've drafted a questionnaire – it's mainly multiple-choice, which should keep it quick.
- Dev
- I've had a look. My main worry is question four: 'Do you agree that saving for retirement is a responsible thing to do?' That's a leading question. Almost everyone will say yes, and it tells us nothing.
- Clara
- Fair point. I suppose I was trying to get at attitudes. Maybe we drop it and ask people to rank their priorities instead – paying rent, saving, holidays and so on.
- Dev
- That's much better. Ranking forces a choice. Now, who are we sending it to? You've suggested the whole staff list.
- Clara
- Yes, but I'm worried about the response rate. In my experience, people who've already joined are far more likely to fill in a survey about pensions, so we'd end up hearing mostly from the wrong group.
- Dev
- That's a real risk. One option is a small incentive – a voucher, say – though I'm not convinced it removes the bias; it might just attract people who like vouchers.
- Clara
- I'm inclined to think we need interviews as well, then. A survey can show us patterns, but if we want to understand why people don't join, we need to hear them explain it.
- Dev
- I agree in principle, but interviews are slow. How about this: we run the survey, and then interview a small group of non-members chosen from the responses?
- Clara
- That works. And we should promise anonymity – people may not want their manager to know they're struggling financially.
- Dev
- Definitely. There's one more thing I'd raise. Have you seen the research on default options? In some organisations, staff are enrolled automatically unless they choose to leave, and participation tends to be much higher.
- Clara
- I've read about it. But I'm not sure that follows for us. Our brief is to understand the reasons, not to recommend a policy – at least not yet.
- Dev
- I take your point. Even so, it might be worth adding one question on whether people would object to automatic enrolment. It costs us nothing.
- Clara
- All right – one question, at the end. And let's pilot the whole thing with five colleagues before we send it out, just to check nothing's confusing.
