Too much choice?
(Bài đọc tự viết; cửa hàng, nhà nghiên cứu và số liệu là giả định.)
A It has become something of a modern proverb that too much choice makes us miserable. Faced with forty kinds of breakfast cereal or two hundred streaming options, the argument goes, we struggle to decide, delay decisions, and feel less satisfied with whatever we eventually pick. The idea is intuitively appealing, and it has been used to justify everything from simpler pension plans to shorter restaurant menus.
B The story usually begins with a striking experiment. Shoppers who were offered a small selection of products, so the account runs, were far more likely to buy something than those offered a large selection, even though the larger display attracted more initial interest. The finding spread quickly through books, lectures and business seminars, often stripped of its details. What was originally a result about one type of product in one setting gradually became a general law of human behaviour.
C The difficulty is that later studies have not always produced the same result. Some researchers who attempted similar experiments found the effect; others found no effect at all; a few even found that people bought more when offered more options. When results vary this much, the honest conclusion is not that the original finding was wrong, but that it is context-dependent. This is a less exciting message, and perhaps for that reason it has travelled less widely.
D So when does choice become overwhelming? Researchers who have reviewed the evidence suggest several conditions. Large selections seem to be most discouraging when the options are difficult to compare, when people do not have clear preferences in advance, and when the decision feels important but the differences between options are hard to judge. A person who knows exactly what kind of coffee they like is unlikely to be troubled by a long menu; a first-time buyer choosing between thirty similar insurance policies may well be.
E The case of a hypothetical bookshop, Leaf & Page, illustrates how this might work in practice. When the shop reduced the number of titles on its front tables, sales of those titles rose, but overall sales did not change. The manager’s interpretation was not that customers wanted less choice, but that they wanted help choosing. The shop then introduced handwritten recommendation cards from staff, and these, rather than the reduction itself, were associated with the largest increase in sales of less well-known books.
F The broader lesson concerns how ideas from psychology are used. A single memorable experiment can be enormously influential, particularly when it confirms what people already suspect. Yet behaviour is rarely governed by simple rules. The more useful question is usually not “Is choice good or bad?” but “Under what conditions does a particular kind of choice help or hinder?” That question is harder to answer – and far less likely to fit on the cover of a bestseller.

Based on the pilot, I'd recommend reducing the options to three – but I'd treat that as provisional.
Dựa trên thử nghiệm, tôi đề xuất giảm còn ba lựa chọn – nhưng xem đó là tạm thời.
The results are encouraging, although the sample was small.
