The myth of the anonymous dataset

(Bài đọc tự viết; tổ chức, nhân vật và ví dụ là giả định.)

A Every day, organisations share large collections of information about people – hospital records, travel patterns, shopping habits – with researchers, partners and sometimes the public. To protect privacy, the usual practice is to remove obvious identifiers such as names, addresses and phone numbers before the data is released. The resulting dataset is then described as “anonymous”. The word is reassuring. It may also be misleading.

B The problem is that people can often be identified without their names. A combination of a few apparently harmless details – a date of birth, a postcode and gender, for instance – may be enough to narrow a large population down to a single individual. When such a dataset is compared with other information that is publicly available, it can become possible to work out who is who. This process is known as re-identification, and it does not necessarily require advanced technical skill.

C The risk grows with the level of detail. Information that is aggregate – the number of patients treated in a region each month, say – is very difficult to link to any one person. Information that is granular, recording individual journeys or purchases minute by minute, is far more revealing, because each person’s pattern is almost unique. Researchers value granular data precisely because it allows more precise analysis; this is the central trade-off that organisations must manage.

D Several safeguards are commonly used. One is to reduce the precision of sensitive details, recording an age range rather than an exact date of birth, or a district rather than a street. Another is to add a small amount of random variation to the figures, so that patterns across the whole group remain accurate while individual records become less reliable. A third, increasingly common approach is not to release data at all, but to allow approved researchers to run analyses inside a secure environment and take away only the results.

E None of these methods is perfect, and each has costs. Reducing precision can make data less useful for medical research, where small differences may matter. Adding variation requires careful judgement about how much is enough. Secure environments are expensive to run and may slow research down. Dr Mara Kessler, who advises public bodies on data sharing, argues that the honest approach is to stop describing data as simply anonymous or not. “It is better to speak of degrees of risk,” she says, “and to be transparent about which risks have been accepted and why.”

F This shift in language matters because trust depends on it. If people are told their information is anonymous and later discover that it could be traced back to them, they may become reluctant to share it at all – even for purposes, such as medical research, that could benefit them. Greater openness about the limits of protection may sound less comforting, but it is arguably a firmer foundation for long-term accountability.

✅ Câu 1–7: Complete the summary using the list of words A–L.

  1. Removing names does not always make data (1) ____.

  2. Data that is (2) ____, such as monthly regional totals, is very difficult to link to one person.

  3. Detailed, minute-by-minute data is far more (3) ____.

  4. One safeguard is to reduce the (4) ____ of sensitive details.

  5. Another is to add random (5) ____ to the figures.

  6. Secure environments for analysis can be (6) ____ to operate.

  7. If people feel misled, they may become (7) ____ to share their data.

✅ Câu 8–10: TRUE, FALSE hoặc NOT GIVEN?

  1. 8. Re-identification always requires advanced technical skills.

  2. 9. Researchers prefer granular data because it allows more precise analysis.

  3. 10. Most public bodies now follow Dr Kessler's advice.

🧩 3. Ngôn ngữ trọng tâm – 10 phút: phân biệt phương án cùng loại từ

Chỗ trống Phương án cùng loại Vì sao chỉ một đúng
data is (3) ____ granular / revealing / anonymous / secure “far more ____” + ý của đoạn C: chi tiết → dễ lộ → revealing (granular là đặc điểm, không phải hệ quả mà câu hỏi nói)
reduce the (4) ____ precision / variation / judgement đoạn D: reduce the precision of sensitive details
can be (6) ____ to operate expensive / secure / transparent đoạn E: expensive to run

✍️ 4. Thực hành – 20 phút

  1. Với mỗi câu sai, ghi lớp lọc bạn bỏ qua (ngữ pháp / collocation / logic) (8 phút).
  2. Tự tạo 2 câu summary cho đoạn F với hộp 4 từ cùng loại (7 phút).
  3. Sổ cụm từ band 7: narrow X down to, degrees of risk, a firmer foundation for (5 phút).

📝 Email trả lời khách hàng (70–100 từ)

A client asks how the personal information they provided will be used. Reply: what you collect, why, who can access it, and how long you keep it. Be accurate and avoid over-promising (e.g. don't say 'completely safe').
