The line graph shows the proportion of adults who smoked every day in three countries from 2000 to 2020, together with forecasts for 2030 and 2040.
Overall, daily smoking is expected to decline in all three countries by the end of the period. The most striking change is in Country A, which moved from having by far the highest rate in 2000 to being projected to have the lowest by 2030, while Country C is the only one where the figure rose before falling.
In 2000, almost a third of adults in Country A smoked daily, compared with 24% in Country B and 15% in Country C. Over the next twenty years, the rate in Country A fell steeply to 19%, just below that of Country B, which declined only gradually to 20%. Country C, by contrast, saw a modest increase to 18%.
The projections suggest that these patterns will continue to diverge. Country A's rate is forecast to fall to 14% in 2030 and to 10% in 2040. The upward trend in Country C is expected to reverse, with the figure dropping to 12%, whereas Country B is predicted to decline only slightly to 16%, leaving it with the highest rate of the three.

I am writing to express my thanks for the care my father received on Ward 4B between 12 and 19 October, following his hip operation.
Throughout his stay, the nursing staff were consistently patient and attentive. I would particularly like to commend Nurse Thu, who took the time to explain each stage of his recovery plan in simple language and who noticed early on that he was struggling to eat, arranging softer meals the same day. My father is a proud man who rarely complains, so her observation made a real difference to his comfort and confidence.
One small suggestion, which I offer constructively, concerns information for families at discharge. We received a great deal of advice on the final morning, much of it verbally and in a short time, and later we were unsure about some details of his exercises. A one-page written summary, perhaps with a phone number to call during the first week at home, would help families in a similar position to support their relatives safely.
