Q: What was your secondary school like? Quite exam-oriented, looking back. It was a good school academically, but almost everything was geared towards the university entrance exam, so there wasn’t much room for anything hands-on. I do remember the science labs fondly, though – they were the only lessons where we got to actually do something rather than just copy from the board.
Q: Do you think teachers today have a harder job than in the past? In some ways, yes. They’re competing with phones for students’ attention, and parents tend to be far more involved – which can be helpful, but also adds pressure. That said, they have access to resources my teachers could only have dreamt of, so I wouldn’t say it’s simply harder, just different.

The subject I’d like to talk about is history, which I genuinely disliked for most of secondary school but now find fascinating.
At first, my problem with it was the way it was taught. Every lesson followed the same pattern: the teacher read from the textbook, we copied down dates and names, and then we memorised them for the test. It was pure rote learning, and I couldn’t see the point – the events felt completely disconnected from my own life.
What changed my mind was a new teacher in my final year. Instead of starting with dates, she started with questions. I remember her first lesson very clearly: she showed us two newspaper reports of the same event from different countries and asked us why they told such different stories. For the first time, history felt less like a list of facts and more like a puzzle about evidence and points of view. Something just clicked.
These days, I read history books for pleasure, and I think it’s actually made me better at my job, because I’m much more aware that any report reflects the perspective of whoever wrote it. In retrospect, I suspect I’d always had the interest; it just needed the right teacher to spark it. If she hadn’t joined the school that year, I probably wouldn’t read history now at all – and I’d be a lot more inclined to take what I read at face value.
