Three journalism students, Amira, Ben and Kim, discuss sources for an assignment on whether a city's new bus lanes have reduced travel times (giả định)

- Amira
- OK, we've each found a source. Mine is the council's press release from last month. It says journey times on the main routes fell by about a fifth after the lanes opened.
- Ben
- The trouble is, the council introduced the lanes, so it has a vested interest in making them look successful. I'm not saying the figure is wrong, but we can't treat a press release as neutral.
- Amira
- Fair enough. To be fair to it, though, it's careful to note that the figures cover only the morning rush hour.
- Kim
- Which is exactly why I went looking for something independent. I found a study by a transport research group at the university. It's peer-reviewed, and it uses GPS data from the buses themselves.
- Ben
- That sounds much stronger. What did it find?
- Kim
- Broadly the same direction – faster journeys – but a smaller effect. Around ten per cent, and mostly on two routes. The authors acknowledge that roadworks finished at the same time, which may explain part of the improvement.
- Ben
- So the council probably overstated it, but the basic claim is corroborated. My source is different – it's a newspaper feature based on interviews with drivers and passengers. It's vivid, but it's anecdotal. A few people say the buses are faster; a few shop owners say they've lost customers because there's less parking.
- Amira
- Is that useless, then?
- Ben
- Not at all – it raises a question the other two don't even consider: the effect on local businesses. But it can't tell us how common those experiences are.
- Kim
- So how do we structure the assignment?
- Amira
- I'd lead with the university study, since its methodology is the most transparent, and then compare the council's figure with it.
- Ben
- Agreed – and use the newspaper interviews at the end to show what's still unknown, rather than as evidence either way.
- Kim
- Fine, as long as we explain clearly why we've ranked them that way. The tutor will want to see our reasoning, not just the sources.
