🗣️ 2. Đầu vào – 20 phút

Q: Do you use a lot of paper in your daily life? Less than I used to. At work we’ve gone almost entirely paperless – reports, contracts, even signatures are digital now. The one exception is notebooks. I still jot down ideas by hand in meetings, partly because I remember things better that way, and partly because typing during a conversation can come across as a bit rude.

Q: How do you usually get the news? Mostly through a couple of news apps, though I make a point of reading at least one in-depth article a week rather than just skimming headlines. I’ve noticed that if I only read headlines, I end up with a very distorted picture of what’s actually happening.

🗂️ Part 2 – Thẻ đề

Describe a news story that made a strong impression on you.

You should say:

  • what the story was about
  • where you heard or read about it
  • what happened
  • and explain why it made a strong impression on you.

  • Dùng ngôn ngữ tường thuật: It was reported that…, Apparently…, According to…
  • Phần cuối band 7: nhận xét về cách đưa tin (coverage), không chỉ cảm xúc.
👀 Bài nói mẫu Part 2 (đọc sau khi đã tự nói)

Bài mẫu do khóa học viết; câu chuyện là giả định, không phải tin thật.

The story I’d like to talk about was about a small mountain village whose only school was about to close because the building had become unsafe. I first came across it on a news app, and then I read a longer feature about it a few weeks later.

According to the first report, the local authority had said it couldn’t afford to repair the building, so the forty or so children in the village would have to travel nearly two hours each way to the nearest town. What happened next was quite remarkable. Apparently, a former pupil who now worked as an engineer in the city shared the story online, and it went viral. Within a month, people had donated enough money and materials to rebuild two classrooms, and dozens of volunteers – builders, electricians, even retired teachers – spent their weekends helping out.

It made a strong impression on me for two reasons. The first is simply that it was an unusually hopeful story at a time when most of the news I read seemed quite depressing. But the second reason is more complicated. The longer feature pointed out that the village was lucky – the story happened to catch people’s attention, but hundreds of other schools in similar situations don’t get that kind of coverage. That made me think about how the news shapes which problems get solved. It’s not necessarily the most serious ones, but the ones with the most compelling story.

So I suppose it changed how I read the news. I still enjoy positive stories, but I try not to take them at face value as proof that everything is fine.

🔬 Phân tích bài mẫu
  • Tường thuật chính xác, có khoảng cách: According to the first report, Apparently, The longer feature pointed out that…
  • Hai lý do, lý do thứ hai sâu hơn (vai trò của truyền thông) – đây là điểm “nâng” bài nói lên band 7+.
  • Thì quá khứ hoàn thành đúng chỗ: the local authority had said…, people had donated…
  • Kết có thay đổi hành vi (changed how I read the news).

⚠️ Lỗi hay gặp ở band 6.5: kể tin thật mà nhớ sai chi tiết (nên chọn tin bạn nắm chắc hoặc nói chung); chỉ nói cảm xúc “I was very sad/happy”; dùng sai news số nhiều (the news were → the news was).

Part 3 – truyền thông

Nghe câu hỏi → nghĩ 10–15 giây → ghi âm câu trả lời 2–3 câu (khoảng 20–30 giây) → nghe lại và tự chấm bằng ô kiểm tra bên dưới.

  • Lập luận cơ chế: This is partly because… which means that…
  • Dự đoán thận trọng: It's unlikely that… completely, but…
  1. Why do negative stories get more attention than positive ones?

  2. Should news organisations be neutral, or is it acceptable for them to take a position?

  3. How can ordinary people tell whether a news source is reliable?
