Q: Do you recycle at home? I try to, though I wouldn’t call myself particularly disciplined about it. We sort paper and plastic bottles, but food waste still goes in with everything else, mainly because our building doesn’t have a separate collection. What’s changed more is how much I buy in the first place – I’ve cut down a lot on single-use packaging.
Q: What kind of weather do you like? Cool, dry mornings, ideally – the kind you get for a few weeks at the end of the year. What I find hardest isn’t the heat itself but the humidity; on a really muggy day, even walking ten minutes to the office leaves me drained.

I’d like to talk about a work trip a couple of years ago, when I was supposed to visit a client’s factory in a coastal province and then fly back the same evening for a family dinner.
The plan looked simple on paper. I’d take an early flight, spend the day at the factory and catch the last flight home. But a tropical storm, which the forecast had said would pass further north, changed direction overnight. By the time I landed, the sky had turned almost black, and within an hour there was torrential rain.
The knock-on effects came one after another. The road to the factory flooded, so the driver had to take a much longer route, which meant that I arrived three hours late. Half of the staff I was meant to interview had been sent home early for safety reasons. And, as you can probably guess, the last flight back was cancelled, so I was stranded in a small hotel near the airport with a phone charger and one clean shirt.
At first I was really frustrated, mainly because I’d promised my family I’d be back. But I decided to make the best of it. I rearranged the remaining interviews by video call the next morning, and the client actually seemed to appreciate that I’d stayed rather than rushing off.
Looking back, it taught me two things. One is to always have a plan B for anything that depends on the weather, especially in the rainy season. The other is that people tend to remember how you handle a problem more than the problem itself.
