The table compares employment in six sectors of Country T's economy in 2026 with projections for 2036.

Overall, the total number of jobs is expected to remain almost unchanged, rising only slightly from 12.9 to 13.1 million, but there is likely to be a clear shift in where people work. Manufacturing, retail and administration are all projected to shrink, while healthcare and IT are forecast to expand considerably. Manufacturing will nevertheless remain the largest employer.

In 2026, manufacturing accounted for 3.5 million workers, followed by retail with 2.8 million and administration with 2.2 million. All three are set to contract over the following decade. Administration is expected to see the sharpest fall, losing almost a quarter of its workforce to stand at 1.7 million, the same figure as construction, which will grow only marginally.

By contrast, healthcare and social care is projected to add 0.8 million jobs, the largest increase in absolute terms, and will have overtaken retail to become the second-largest sector by 2036. IT and data, although the smallest sector in both years, is expected to grow fastest in relative terms, by three-quarters, from 0.8 to 1.4 million.

Dear Ms Pham,

I am writing to ask whether I could enrol on a part-time diploma in data analysis starting in February, and whether the company would allow me some release time to attend.

The course is run by the city's technical university and lasts twelve months. Most of the work is online, but there are classes every second Friday afternoon, as well as a short project in the final term.

As you know, our team spends a large part of each month preparing performance reports by hand. The diploma covers exactly the tools we would need to automate much of this work, so I expect that, by the end of the course, I will have built a reporting system that saves the team several hours a week. It would also allow me to take on more of the analysis that we currently send to an outside consultant.

I have discussed the Friday classes with Minh, who has agreed to cover my urgent tasks on those afternoons, and I would make up the remaining hours later in the same week. I would also be happy to share what I learn with the rest of the team.

I would be grateful if we could discuss this before the enrolment deadline on 15 December.
