Q: Do you think you’ll be doing the same job in ten years? Probably something related, but I’d be surprised if it looked exactly the same. By then, I imagine a lot of the reporting side will have been automated, so I’ll probably be spending more time on the parts that need judgement – dealing with people, sorting out problems that don’t fit a template.
Q: At what age do people usually retire in your country? It depends a lot on the type of work, as far as I know, but people in office jobs tend to stop working in their early sixties. What’s interesting is that quite a few of them don’t really stop – they wind down gradually, doing some consulting or helping with the family business.

The skill I’d like to talk about is running meetings online – which sounds simple, but turned out to be surprisingly hard to do well.
A few years ago, the company I worked for moved most of its training sessions online almost overnight. I’d been running face-to-face workshops for a while and felt fairly confident, so I assumed I’d just do the same thing on a screen.
That assumption lasted about one session. In a room, you can read people’s faces and adjust as you go. Online, half the cameras were off, nobody wanted to speak first, and I ended up talking for forty minutes to what felt like a wall of grey squares. The feedback afterwards was polite but very clear: people had found it hard to stay focused.
So I had to learn it more or less from scratch, mostly by trial and error. I watched how more experienced colleagues ran their sessions, and I started breaking everything into short blocks of ten minutes, with a poll or a small-group task in between. It wasn’t until I started giving people something to do in the first two minutes that things really changed – once someone has spoken once, they’re far more likely to speak again.
It was a steep learning curve, but by the end of that year it had become second nature. And the effect has gone well beyond online meetings. I’m much more aware now of how long people can actually concentrate, so even my face-to-face sessions are shorter and more interactive than they used to be.
