Q: Are there many wild animals where you live? In the city itself, mostly birds and the occasional gecko on the wall. What’s interesting, though, is that since the riverside park was replanted, people have started noticing kingfishers, which I’d never have expected so close to the centre.

The place I’d like to describe is a stretch of hills about an hour’s drive from the city where I live. There’s no famous landmark there – just a reservoir surrounded by pine forest and a few narrow trails that local people use.
I go there roughly once a month, usually on a Sunday morning, sometimes on my own and sometimes with friends. We leave early, partly to avoid the traffic and partly because the light at that time is extraordinary.
What strikes you first is the sound – or rather the lack of it. After a week of motorbikes and construction, the only things you can hear are the wind in the pines and, now and then, a bird you can’t quite identify. The air smells of resin and damp earth, and in the dry season the path is covered in a thick layer of pine needles that are surprisingly soft underfoot.
Usually we just walk for a couple of hours, stop for a picnic by the water and come back. But one time stands out. Last spring, a friend’s eight-year-old nephew, who’s normally impossible to keep quiet, spotted a deer between the trees and stood absolutely still for what must have been a whole minute. His uncle said he’d never seen him that calm.
I suppose the main reason I keep going back is that it’s the one place where I genuinely switch off. At home, I’m always thinking about the next task. Up there, there’s simply nothing to do except notice things – and somehow that’s exactly what recharges me for the week ahead.
