The two maps illustrate how Hollins Farm was transformed into a nature reserve between 2010 and 2026.
Overall, the site changed from mainly agricultural land to a mosaic of natural habitats, and its buildings were adapted for visitors rather than farming. The main road and an area of grazing land in the north-east, however, remained.
In 2010, most of the site was taken up by arable fields growing wheat, which were divided from the pasture by a straight drainage ditch. By 2026, the western part of these fields had been planted with native woodland, while the ditch had been replaced by a wetland and pond in the centre of the site. South of the wetland, the remaining farmland had been turned into a wildflower meadow.
The buildings in the south-east also underwent significant changes. The farmhouse was converted into a visitor centre, and the barns next to it were demolished to make way for a car park. The grazing pasture in the north-east was slightly reduced in size to accommodate the wetland, but it was still used for cattle.

Dear Mr Hoang,
I saw your notice in the community newsletter asking for volunteers for the winter bird and mammal survey at Hollins Nature Reserve, and I would very much like to take part.
I have been walking in the reserve with my family almost every weekend since it opened, and it has been remarkable to see how quickly wildlife has returned to what used to be farmland. Helping with the survey seems an ideal way to contribute to its work, and I would also like to learn more about the species we see.
Although I have no formal training in ecology, I am a keen amateur birdwatcher and can identify most common species by sight and many by their calls. In my job, I regularly carry out site inspections, so I am used to recording observations carefully and consistently.
I would be available on Saturday and Sunday mornings throughout December and January. Could you let me know whether volunteers receive any training before the survey begins, and whether I would need to bring my own binoculars? I would also be interested to know whether my teenage son could join me.
