The diagram illustrates a simplified model of the process by which a research paper is reviewed before being published in an academic journal.

Overall, the process consists of seven stages, beginning with the submission of the paper and ending with its publication. A paper may be rejected at two points, and those requiring substantial changes enter a cycle of revision and review that may be repeated.

Once a paper has been submitted by its authors, it is first checked by the journal's editor. Papers that fall outside the journal's scope or are of poor quality are rejected outright at this point. The remainder are sent to two or three reviewers, whose identities are usually kept anonymous, and who return reports recommending acceptance, minor or major revisions, or rejection.

The editor then makes a decision. Should major revisions be required, the authors revise the paper and resubmit it, after which it is sent back to the reviewers. If only minor changes are needed, these are checked by the editor alone. Finally, the paper is accepted and published, although it may still be corrected or even retracted at a later date.

I am writing in response to your recent survey on library services. As there was not enough space on the form, I thought a letter would allow me to give more useful feedback.

I have been a member for about four years, and I have been particularly impressed by the children's section. The Saturday storytelling sessions are always well organised, and the staff are patient and welcoming with young readers.

However, I have noticed that the study area on the first floor has become increasingly noisy, especially in the late afternoon. On several occasions last month, groups of students were holding discussions at the silent desks, and the staff on duty seemed reluctant to intervene. As a result, it has become very difficult to concentrate there.

One option might be to set aside a separate room for group work, so that the main area could remain genuinely quiet. Clearer signs explaining the rules for each zone would also help.
