Q: Do you think art is important? I do, although I’m not sure I’d say that about every painting in a gallery. What matters to me is art that people actually live with – murals on a street, a well-designed public space. That kind of art changes how a place feels, even for people who’d never go to a museum.

The building I’d like to talk about is an old cinema near the market in the town where I grew up. It’s not on any tourist map, but for people of my parents’ generation it was the centre of social life.
It’s a two-storey building with a curved front and tall windows, painted a faded yellow that I think was once quite bright. Above the entrance there are still the metal letters of its name, although a couple have fallen off, so it now spells something slightly ridiculous.
As far as I know, it was built sometime in the 1960s, and for about thirty years it was the only cinema in town. My parents actually had their first date there. But once people started watching films at home, it lost its audience and eventually closed. Since then it’s been used as a warehouse, and the inside is quite run-down.
There’s been talk recently of tearing it down to build apartments, which is why it’s on my mind. What makes it worth saving, in my opinion, isn’t really its architecture – there are more beautiful buildings in the country. It’s the memories attached to it. Almost every family in the town has a story connected to that cinema, and once it’s gone, there’ll be nothing left to remind younger people of how the town used to be.
I don’t think it necessarily has to be a cinema again. It could become a community arts centre or a café with a small screening room. But I’d like it to be kept in a way that respects what it meant to people.
