The chart compares the amount of money that the arts in City Q received from public funding and from private sponsorship at three-year intervals between 2011 and 2026.
Overall, the two sources moved in opposite directions: public funding declined steadily, while private sponsorship grew consistently. What is most striking is that, by the end of the period, sponsorship had overtaken public funding as the larger source. Because the increase in private money exceeded the fall in public money, total funding for the arts rose slightly.
In 2011, public funding stood at 40 million dollars, five times the 8 million provided by sponsors. Over the following fifteen years, it fell in every period shown, reaching 26 million in 2026, a decline of 35%.
Private sponsorship, by contrast, rose without interruption, nearly quadrupling to 31 million. The gap between the two sources narrowed rapidly, from 32 million in 2011 to just 1 million in 2023, and by 2026 sponsorship exceeded public funding by 5 million. As a result, the combined total increased from 48 million to 57 million dollars.
