Overall, total enrolment rose substantially over the decade, and although English remained by far the most popular language, Korean grew the fastest. In terms of motivation, work was clearly the most common reason for studying a language.
Between 2016 and 2026, the total number of language students increased from 1,830 to 3,000. English courses continued to attract the largest number of learners, rising by a quarter to 1,500. The most dramatic change, however, was in Korean, where enrolment increased more than fivefold, from just 80 to 450 – an even larger rise in absolute terms than that for English. The number of Chinese learners more than doubled to 650, while Japanese saw a more moderate increase, from 250 to 400.
As for students' motivation in 2026, 45% said they were learning mainly for work, while a quarter hoped to study abroad. Travel and personal interest were considerably less common reasons, cited by 18% and 12% respectively.

Thanks for your message – it was great to hear you're thinking of learning Japanese! I know you're worried about being too old and too busy, but honestly, I think you should go for it.
For a start, forty is definitely not too old. Adults often make faster progress than children at the beginning, because we can understand grammar explanations and we know why we're learning. You might never sound exactly like a native speaker, but that really doesn't matter if people can understand you.
As for time, the trick is to keep it short and regular. If I were you, I'd aim for fifteen or twenty minutes a day rather than one long session at the weekend – it's much easier to fit around work. What really helped me with English was listening to short podcasts on my way to the office and saying new phrases out loud, even if I felt a bit silly.
Why don't we meet up once a week for a coffee? I could help you plan your study, and we could check each other's progress – I need to keep my English up anyway!
