Three sociology students, Ana, Ben and Chi, plan a group project on how families have changed (giả định)

- Ana
- OK, so we need to decide on our focus. I was thinking we could look at how household size has changed across three generations in our own families.
- Ben
- I like that. What's more, it gives us a natural way in – we can each interview a grandparent, a parent and someone our own age.
- Chi
- Having said that, three families isn't much of a sample. We'd be describing our families, not drawing any general conclusions.
- Ana
- That's true. Mind you, the brief says it's a small qualitative project – the tutor isn't expecting statistics.
- Chi
- Fair point. In that case, maybe we could add a short questionnaire for other students, just to see whether our families are typical or unusual?
- Ben
- Good idea, as long as it's short. Ten questions, maximum. On top of that, we'd need to get it approved before sending it out, which could take a week.
- Ana
- Going back to the interviews, though – what should we actually ask? I don't want it to be just 'how many people lived in your house'.
- Chi
- What I mean is, we should ask why things changed. Did people move for work? Did they choose to have fewer children, or was it more about cost?
- Ben
- And how they felt about it. My grandmother always says she misses living with her sisters, but she also says she'd never want to share a kitchen again.
- Ana
- That's exactly the kind of thing that makes a qualitative project interesting. Anyway, what about the presentation?
- Ben
- I could do the slides – I'm better at that than at writing.
- Chi
- Then I'll write up the questionnaire results, and Ana, you're best at pulling everything together.
- Ana
- Fine – I'll take the introduction and conclusion. So, all in all, it comes down to three interviews each, a ten-question survey, and a draft by the end of next week.
