Overall, the Delta was by far the most important rice-growing region, producing roughly two-thirds of the country's total and achieving the highest yield. National output rose slightly over the decade, but the regions followed different trends, with three increasing their production and two seeing a decline.
In 2016, the Delta produced 22 million tonnes of rice, and this figure rose to 23.5 million in 2026 – almost double the output of the other four regions combined. Production in the Central region and the Highlands also increased, with the latter growing fastest in relative terms, to 1.8 million tonnes, half as much again as ten years earlier. By contrast, output fell in the North, from 6.8 to 6.2 million tonnes, and in the South-East by more than a quarter.
In 2026, the Delta also had by far the largest harvested area, at 3.9 million hectares, and the highest yield, at 6 tonnes per hectare. Yields elsewhere ranged from 5.1 tonnes in the Central region to 5.6 in the North and Highlands.
