The two maps illustrate how Westgate Square was redeveloped between 2010 and 2026.
Overall, an area that was largely given over to cars was transformed into a space designed primarily for pedestrians, with new green, cultural and recreational facilities replacing parking and through traffic.
The most dramatic change occurred at the centre of the square. In 2010, almost the whole central area was occupied by a car park, but by 2026 this had given way to a tree-lined plaza, with seating and a fountain along its southern side. Mill Lane, which had carried traffic along the bottom of the square, was pedestrianised, and a playground was built in the south-western corner.
Around the edges, the changes were less radical but still significant. The market hall on the eastern side was converted into a library with a café, and the bus stop, previously at the western end of the High Street, was relocated to the eastern end. A cycle lane was also added along the High Street. The public toilets in the west were the only feature that remained unchanged.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I attended the public exhibition of the plans for the new community sports centre last week and would like to share some comments as a local resident.
Overall, I am very pleased with the proposals. I particularly welcome the decision to include a learner pool alongside the main pool, since the nearest facility for young swimmers is currently over half an hour away by bus. The large windows facing the park are also an attractive feature and should make the building feel open and welcoming.
I am concerned, however, about access to the main entrance. According to the plans, visitors arriving by bus will need to walk along the edge of the car park, where there is no separate footpath. At busy times, this could be uncomfortable for families with pushchairs and potentially unsafe for children.
Would it be possible to add a marked pedestrian route from the bus stop to the entrance, perhaps lined with low planting so that it is clearly separated from the cars? This would, I believe, make the centre noticeably more accessible at little extra cost.
I hope these comments are useful, and I look forward to seeing the final design.
