Q: What do you like about the area where you live? It’s a bit of a mix, actually. The main road is pretty hectic during rush hour, but if you turn off it, there’s a network of small lanes that are surprisingly tranquil. That contrast is probably what I like most – you can get anything you need within five minutes, and still sleep with the window open.
Q: Do you prefer old buildings or modern ones? It depends on what they’re for. I find a lot of new apartment blocks a bit soulless – they could be anywhere in the world. But I wouldn’t want to work in an old building that’s cramped and badly lit just because it has character. Ideally, I suppose, you’d keep the facade and modernise what’s behind it.

The place I’d like to describe is a small riverside park about ten minutes’ walk from where I live. It’s not famous or particularly beautiful in a postcard sense – it’s really just a strip of grass and trees between the river and a busy road – but I probably spend more time there than anywhere else outside home and work.
What strikes you first is the noise, or rather the way it changes. At the entrance you can still hear the traffic, but once you’re a few metres down the path, the sound of the water takes over, and you genuinely forget you’re in the middle of a city.
I mostly go there in the early morning, before work. There’s a group of older people doing tai chi near the old banyan tree, a few joggers, and usually someone fishing, although I’ve never seen anyone actually catch anything. I tend to walk the length of the path and back, which takes about twenty minutes. At weekends it comes alive in a completely different way – families, food stalls, kids on bikes – which is lovely, but it’s the quieter version that I really value.
I think what makes it special is that nobody is trying to sell you anything. Most public spaces in cities now are, in one way or another, attached to a shopping centre. This one is just there, free, for anyone. That’s partly why I’d be quite upset if it were ever redeveloped – it’s one of the few places where I can actually think.
