Two students, Maya and Leo, plan a presentation on authorship and machine-generated work (giả định)

Leo
So for our presentation on authorship, I think we need to start with the basic question: if a machine produces a picture, who owns it?
Maya
Right, but I'd frame it slightly differently. The question isn't really who owns it – that's a legal issue, and the rules differ between countries and are still developing. What we're interested in is who deserves credit as the author.
Leo
Fair enough. Let's go through the examples the tutor gave us. The first one was a poem produced from a single one-line prompt.
Maya
For me that's straightforward. If all you did was type 'write a poem about autumn', you haven't really authored anything. I wouldn't give it any protection at all.
Leo
I'm with you on that one. It'd be like claiming you'd painted a picture because you'd asked someone else to paint it. The second is the photograph – a real photo, but heavily altered with editing tools.
Maya
Well, the photographer chose the scene, the light, the moment. The tools just changed the colours.
Leo
Hmm, I'm not so sure. In the example, the tool replaced the whole background. At some point it stops being the photographer's picture.
Maya
Maybe, but I still think the original choices matter more than what happened afterwards.
Leo
Then there's the novel – the writer used a text generator for months, rewriting every chapter.
Maya
That's where it gets interesting. I'd say it depends entirely on how much of the final text the writer actually changed.
Leo
Agreed. If she rewrote most of it, it's hers. If she just stitched together the machine's paragraphs, much less so. And the last one – the logo for the small bakery?
Maya
The owner wrote a very detailed description – colours, shapes, the feeling she wanted – and tried dozens of versions before choosing one.
Leo
In that case I think the credit should go to her, as the person who wrote the instructions. Choosing and directing is a creative act in itself.
Maya
Yes, the designer there is really the owner. So what's our overall argument?
Leo
Maybe that authorship isn't all or nothing – it's more of a scale.
Maya
I like that. And I think we should finish with a question rather than a conclusion – something like: what happens to young artists if clients stop paying for the simple jobs they used to learn on?
Leo
Good. I'll put the slides together if you draft the handout.
Maya
Deal. Let's meet to rehearse on Thursday – not Wednesday, I've got a lab that afternoon.

We are interested in authorship. What we’re interested in is who deserves credit.
Ownership is not really the question. The question isn’t really who owns it.
The amount the writer changed is important. It depends on how much of the text the writer changed.
I don’t know if it’s art. Whether it counts as art is another matter.
