What the camera teaches us about creative machines

(Bài đọc tự viết; quan điểm là của tác giả bài viết, nội dung lịch sử ở mức phổ thông.)

A When photography began to spread in the nineteenth century, a number of painters and critics feared that their art had been made redundant. If a machine could record a face with perfect accuracy, why would anyone pay a portrait painter? Much of today’s anxiety about tools that generate images and text echoes those early fears almost word for word.

B In one respect, the fears were justified. Demand for small, inexpensive portraits – for many decades a steady source of income for modest painters – appears to have declined as photographic studios became common. The people who lost out were not, on the whole, celebrated artists, whose reputations depended on far more than likeness. They were ordinary craftsmen who had made a living from routine commissions.

C Yet painting did not disappear. Released from the obligation to record, some artists turned to what the camera could not easily capture: the changing quality of light, the sensation of movement, the inner life of the subject, and eventually forms that represented nothing recognisable at all. It would be too neat to say that photography caused these developments – many social and intellectual forces were at work – but it surely changed what painting was for.

D It is tempting to conclude that the same will happen again: machines will take over routine creative work, and human artists will move to higher ground. I am less confident. The analogy breaks down in at least two places. The camera recorded the world; the new tools imitate style itself, including the styles of living artists. And the routine work that machines now perform is precisely the work through which beginners have traditionally learnt their craft. If those first paid jobs disappear, it is not obvious where the next generation of skilled artists will come from.

E Rather than trying to predict the future, it may be more useful to ask what people actually value when they value art. Part of the answer, surely, is the knowledge that someone made a series of choices – that a human being decided this colour, this word, this silence. If that is right, audiences may come to care more, not less, about how a work was made, and authenticity may become something artists need to demonstrate rather than assume.

F History, then, offers some reassurance, but not a guarantee. Painting survived the camera by becoming something different. Whether today’s creative professions can do the same will depend not only on artists, but on the choices of the audiences and institutions that support them.
