The diagram illustrates the stages involved in developing an image classification system, from the collection of images to the monitoring of the system once it is in use.
Overall, the process consists of eight stages, which can be grouped into data preparation, training and testing, and deployment. A key feature is a loop that sends the process back to its early stages whenever the system fails to reach a target level of accuracy.
To begin with, images are gathered from public and licensed sources and then labelled by human reviewers. Having been labelled, they are divided into two groups: 80% form a training set and the remaining 20% are kept aside as a test set. The model is trained on the first group only, after which its accuracy is measured on the unseen test images.
If accuracy falls below 95%, the process returns either to the collection stage, so that more images can be added, or to the labelling stage, so that errors can be corrected. Once the target is reached, the system is deployed. It continues to be monitored in use, with errors reported by users fed back into the labelling process.
