Lecturer
This afternoon I'm going to talk about oral history – the practice of recording people's spoken memories of the past. For a long time, professional historians regarded it with some suspicion. Written documents seemed more reliable: they were produced at the time, and they could be checked against one another. Memories, by contrast, were thought to be too personal and too easily distorted.
Lecturer
That view began to change in the second half of the twentieth century, partly because historians realised how much the written record leaves out. Official documents are mostly produced by the literate and the powerful. If you want to know how factory workers, farmers or migrants experienced an event, you often have to ask them – because nobody else wrote it down.
Lecturer
Now, the concern about distortion is not unfounded. Psychologists have shown that memory is reconstructive rather than a simple recording: each time we recall an event, we rebuild it, and details from later experiences, conversations or films can creep in. People may also, quite unconsciously, shape their stories to fit what they believe is expected.
Lecturer
But here's the interesting part. Oral historians increasingly treat these so-called distortions not as errors to be eliminated but as evidence in their own right. If a whole community remembers a strike as a victory when the documents suggest it was a defeat, that tells us something important about how the community understands itself.
Lecturer
There are practical lessons for interviewers. First, open questions work better than leading ones – 'What was a typical day like?' rather than 'Was it hard work?'. Second, silence matters: interviewers who resist the urge to fill pauses often hear the most valuable material. And third, the recording should be accompanied by detailed notes on context – who was present, where the interview took place – because these can affect what is said.
Lecturer
Finally, a word on ethics. Interviewees must give informed consent, and they should be told how their recordings will be stored and used. Some may ask for parts to remain closed for a number of years, and those wishes should be respected.
