IELTS 7.5 → 8.0 · Tuần 5: Hạnh phúc & đời sống tinh thần · Buổi 25/60 · ~90 phút

Buổi 25: Writing Task 2 – Opinion: đo thành công quốc gia bằng hạnh phúc thay vì tăng trưởng? Phản bác từ “rather than” trong đề

🎯 Sau buổi này bạn có thể

🔁 1. Ôn tập – 10 phút

🔁 Ôn thẻ từ vựng đến hạn

🧠 Nhớ lại buổi trước (không xem tài liệu)

  1. Bài đọc buổi 22: hai cách đo hạnh phúc là gì? Ưu, nhược của mỗi cách?
  2. Nói “It's QUITE good” và “It's quite GOOD” – nghĩa khác nhau thế nào?
  3. Kể 3 từ định lượng ở giữa thang (không quá mạnh, không quá yếu).

Trả lời to hoặc viết ra giấy, rồi mới mở lại buổi trước để kiểm tra.

✍️ 2. Đầu vào – 25 phút

Đề: Some people believe that governments should measure the success of a country by the happiness of its people rather than by its economic growth. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Đồng ý một phần – một từ

  1. I agree that wellbeing should be measured, but not that it should economic growth.

For decades, the performance of national governments has been judged largely by the rate at which their economies grow. The suggestion that happiness should take its place is an attractive one, and I agree that wellbeing deserves far more attention than it receives. However, I do not believe it should replace economic growth as a measure of success; rather, the two should be considered together.

There are strong reasons to doubt that growth alone tells us whether a country is doing well. An economy can expand while many people work longer hours, breathe dirtier air or feel less secure in their jobs, and a narrow focus on output may encourage short-term decisions whose costs appear only later. Growth, after all, is a means rather than an end in itself: people want rising incomes largely because they hope to live better lives. Measuring how people actually feel about their lives would therefore keep policy-makers focused on what ultimately matters.

Yet relying on happiness instead of growth would create problems of its own. Wellbeing scores are subjective, and answers to survey questions can be influenced by factors that have nothing to do with government policy, from the weather to the order in which questions are asked. A government judged solely on such figures might also be tempted to manage public mood rather than public services. Moreover, economic growth, for all its limitations, pays for the hospitals, schools and pensions on which many people's wellbeing depends.

In my view, the sensible course is to treat wellbeing data as a supplement to economic indicators, not a substitute for them. Some governments have already begun to publish both side by side, which allows citizens to ask not only whether the economy is growing, but whether that growth is making their lives better. In short, happiness should become one of the tests of a successful country, but not the only one.

🔬 Phân tích bài mẫu – điều tách band 8 khỏi band 7.5
  1. Từ chối thế lưỡng nan có lý do: I do not believe it should replace…; rather, the two should be considered together – không phải “cả hai đều tốt” mà là dùng thế nào.
  2. Mỗi thân bài có cơ chế: tăng trưởng không đủ vì growth is a means rather than an end; hạnh phúc không đủ vì subjective… could be tempted to manage public mood rather than public services.
  3. Định lượng và rào đón chính xác: largely, many people, can be influenced, might be tempted, Some governments have already begun – không câu nào mạnh hơn bằng chứng.
  4. Nối bài đọc buổi 22 bằng lời mới (thời tiết, thứ tự câu hỏi) – dùng hiểu biết, không chép.
  5. Kết có câu nén ý: one of the tests of a successful country, but not the only one.

⚠️ Lỗi hay gặp ở band 7.5: Both are important mà không nói dùng thế nào; Happiness cannot be measured (quá tuyệt đối – thực tế có cách đo, dù có hạn chế); dùng Moreover ở mọi đoạn.

🧩 3. Ngôn ngữ trọng tâm – 10 phút: nhượng bộ không làm yếu lập trường

Nhượng bộ Rồi giữ lập trường
for all its limitations, growth pays for public services.
Attractive as the idea is, it overlooks the problem of measurement.
While I accept that…, I do not believe…
…, albeit imperfectly. (Wellbeing can be measured, albeit imperfectly.)

Describe a public space where you like to spend time. (hoặc: Describe a time when you saved money to buy something important.)

You should say:

  • where it is / what you wanted to buy
  • what it looks like / why it was important
  • what you do there / how you saved
  • and explain why you like it / how you felt.

Your team is judged mainly by one number (e.g. sales, tickets closed). Write a short proposal suggesting one additional measure, explaining why it would help and how it could be collected simply.

Proposal: At present, our team is assessed mainly on the number of support tickets closed each week. I suggest we add a short two-question customer survey after each ticket, asking whether the problem was solved and how easy the process was. This would show whether speed is coming at the expense of quality, and could be collected automatically through our existing system.
