Why help a stranger?
(Bài đọc tự viết; nội dung ở mức phổ thông, không trích dẫn nghiên cứu cụ thể.)
A People give blood to strangers, donate to causes on the other side of the world and occasionally risk their lives to pull someone from a river. From the point of view of narrow self-interest, such behaviour is puzzling, and researchers in biology, economics and psychology have proposed several explanations. None, it should be said at the outset, accounts for every case.
B The oldest explanation focuses on family. Helping close relatives, the argument goes, can benefit people who share many of our characteristics, so a tendency to help kin is easy to understand. This may explain why help tends to flow most generously within families. It says very little, however, about the stranger in the river.
C A second explanation emphasises reciprocity: I help you today because I expect you, or someone in my community, to help me tomorrow. Reciprocity is a powerful force in small, stable groups where people meet repeatedly. Its weakness is equally clear. It depends on the expectation of return, and therefore struggles to explain help given to someone the helper will never see again.
D A third account suggests that people help in order to build a reputation for generosity, which may later bring social or practical rewards. There is some evidence that people tend to give more when they know they are being observed. Yet reputation alone cannot easily explain anonymous donations, which by definition bring the giver no public credit.
E For such cases, some economists have proposed what is sometimes called the “warm glow”: the simple pleasure people feel when they give. On this view, the reward for generosity is internal, which is why it has been used to explain why anonymous giving persists. Critics point out that the idea risks becoming circular – people give because they like giving – but it does capture something many donors report.
F It is worth adding two cautions. First, much of the evidence comes from laboratory games in which participants divide small sums of money, and behaviour in such settings may not reflect what people do in real life. Second, some acts of rescue happen on the spot, too quickly for any calculation of costs and benefits. Cultural norms also shape how and to whom people give, so that the same act may be expected in one society and unusual in another.
G The most reasonable conclusion is that helping behaviour has several roots, which combine differently in different situations. Looking for a single master explanation may be less useful than asking which factors are at work in a particular case.

- Câu 7: kết B (large sums of money) sai ý – bài nói small sums; kết D đúng ý.
- Câu 10: Cultural norms số nhiều → loại C, G (is); A đúng ngữ pháp nhưng sai ý; chỉ F khớp nghĩa.
|---|---|
| the argument goes,… | It says very little, however, about… |
| A second explanation emphasises… | Its weakness is equally clear. |
| some economists have proposed… | Critics point out that the idea risks becoming circular |
| There is some evidence that… | The most reasonable conclusion is that… |
👉 Trong Task 2, phần trình bày quan điểm đối lập nên dùng cột trái; phần phản bác dùng cột phải.
