The line graph shows the proportion of adults in four age groups in Country V who did voluntary work at least once a month over a twenty-year period.
Overall, the most striking change was a reversal in the position of the youngest age group, which moved from having the lowest rate of volunteering in 2006 to the highest by 2026. Over the same period, the rate among 25- to 44-year-olds declined steadily.
In 2006, those aged 65 and over were the most likely to volunteer (28%), while just 18% of 16- to 24-year-olds did so. Volunteering among the youngest adults then rose continuously, overtaking the 25–44 group in 2016 and the 45–64 group five years later, before reaching 30% in 2026, four points ahead of the over-65s.
The oldest group's rate peaked at 31% in 2016 but subsequently fell back to 26%. The 25–44 group, meanwhile, was the only one to decline throughout, from 22% to 17%, and had the lowest rate from 2016 onwards. Volunteering among 45- to 64-year-olds remained remarkably stable, between 24% and 26%.
