There is a certain irony in the idea of compulsory voluntary work. Nevertheless, the proposal that every secondary school student should spend time serving their local community deserves serious consideration. In my view, the aim is entirely sound, but a rigid requirement is unlikely to achieve it; a flexible expectation, built into the school curriculum, would be more effective.

The benefits of community involvement for young people are considerable. Helping at a care home, a food bank or an environmental project exposes students to people and problems they might otherwise never encounter, and it can develop practical skills such as communication, responsibility and teamwork that are difficult to teach in a classroom. Advocates of compulsion also point out, with some justification, that if such work is optional, those who would benefit most are often the least likely to volunteer. A universal requirement ensures that the opportunity reaches everyone.

However, compulsion carries a significant risk: it can transform a meaningful experience into a tick-box exercise. Students who are forced to complete a fixed number of hours may approach the work with resentment, and organisations that receive reluctant volunteers may find them more of a burden than a help. More fundamentally, the value of voluntary work lies partly in the choice to do it. Removing that choice may undermine the very motivation the policy hopes to create.

A better approach, I would argue, is to make community service an expected and recognised part of school life without making it a condition of graduation. Schools could offer a range of placements, allow students to choose causes that matter to them, and give credit for reflection on the experience rather than simply for hours completed.

In conclusion, while I agree that all young people should have the chance to contribute to their communities, I believe that encouragement and choice are more likely than obligation to produce lasting commitment.

🔬 Phân tích bài mẫu – điều tách band 8 khỏi band 7.5
  1. Mở bằng nghịch lý (a certain irony in the idea of compulsory voluntary work) – một câu, không biến thành trò chơi chữ.
  2. Tách mục tiêu – phương pháp: the aim is entirely sound, but a rigid requirement is unlikely to achieve it.
  3. Steelman cho phía bắt buộc: those who would benefit most are often the least likely to volunteer – lý lẽ mạnh nhất, được ghi nhận with some justification.
  4. Phản bác có tầng sâu: More fundamentally, the value… lies partly in the choice to do it – không chỉ “học sinh không thích”.
  5. Đề xuất cụ thể (nhiều lựa chọn, ghi nhận phần phản tư thay vì số giờ).
  6. Văn phong: không rút gọn, không từ thân mật, không sáo rỗng; Nevertheless, More fundamentally dùng đúng chỗ.

⚠️ Lỗi hay gặp ở band 7.5: lẫn văn phong (kids, a lot of, I think it’s a good idea); sáo rỗng (In this day and age, volunteering plays a vital role); chỉ phản đối mà không đề xuất.
