- Lecturer
- Today's lecture is about a puzzle in risk perception: why the risks people fear most are often not the ones most likely to harm them.
- Lecturer
- One influential line of research has found that people's judgements of risk depend on qualities other than probability. Two factors stand out. The first is what's sometimes called dread: risks that are catastrophic, involuntary or poorly understood – a nuclear accident, say – tend to be feared far more than everyday risks that, taken together, affect many more people.
- Lecturer
- The second factor is familiarity and control. Most people feel safer driving than flying, even though, distance for distance, driving is generally considered the riskier of the two. Part of the explanation is that when we're driving, we feel in control – and that feeling is reassuring even when it's misleading.
- Lecturer
- A third influence is availability. We judge how common something is by how easily examples come to mind. After a widely reported event, people tend to overestimate the likelihood of similar events, simply because the images are vivid and recent. Media coverage, which naturally focuses on the unusual, can therefore distort our sense of everyday risk.
- Lecturer
- Now, it would be tempting to dismiss all this as irrational. I'd caution against that. Fearing catastrophic risks more than their statistics justify may be quite sensible if a single event could affect thousands of people at once. And the desire for control reflects a reasonable preference for being able to act on a threat.
- Lecturer
- So what does this mean for communicating risk? Experts who simply present the numbers often fail to persuade. More effective approaches acknowledge people's concerns, compare unfamiliar risks with familiar ones, and – crucially – explain what individuals can actually do.

🧩 3. Ngôn ngữ trọng tâm – 10 phút: rào đón vừa đủ (không thừa, không thiếu)
Band 7.5 hay mắc một trong hai lỗi ngược nhau: nói quá chắc (Driving is always more dangerous) hoặc rào đón chồng chất (It might possibly perhaps be somewhat true that…). Band 8 dùng một từ rào đón, đặt đúng chỗ.
| Quá chắc | Rào đón thừa | Vừa đủ ✅ |
|---|---|---|
| Driving is more dangerous than flying. | It may perhaps possibly be the case that driving could be somewhat more dangerous. | Driving is generally considered riskier than flying. |
| The media cause fear. | The media might maybe possibly contribute to fear in some cases. | Media coverage can distort our sense of risk. |
