In praise of a little danger

(Bài đọc tự viết; quan điểm là của tác giả bài viết, nội dung ở mức phổ thông.)

A Over the past few decades, playgrounds in many countries have been transformed. Tall slides and heavy swings have given way to low platforms, rounded edges and soft rubber surfaces, all designed primarily to reduce injuries. Few would argue that a child should break an arm for the sake of an adventure. Yet a growing number of teachers and researchers have begun to ask whether, in removing almost every risk, we have also removed something valuable.

B Their argument centres on what is often called risky play: climbing to heights, moving at speed, using real tools, or exploring without an adult close by. Such activities, they suggest, give children the chance to judge what they are capable of and to experience fear in a setting where it can be managed. A child who has learnt to assess whether a branch will hold her weight may, it is argued, be better prepared for the larger uncertainties of later life.

C This is not to say that all risks are acceptable. A useful distinction can be made between hazards that children cannot recognise – broken glass hidden in the grass, a car approaching from behind – and challenges they can see and assess for themselves, such as a tall tree. The first should be removed wherever possible; the second, within reason, may be worth keeping.

D Why, then, have adults become so cautious? Part of the answer may lie in the way rare tragedies are reported. A single serious accident can receive extensive coverage, and parents, understandably, imagine it happening to their own children. Schools and local authorities face a further pressure: the fear of being blamed, or even taken to court, if something goes wrong. In such circumstances, removing a climbing frame can feel like the only responsible choice.

E Some schools have responded by introducing sessions in which children build with loose materials, light small fires under supervision or play in woodland. Teachers involved often report that pupils become more confident and better at cooperating, although much of this evidence is anecdotal. The research base is growing and generally encouraging, but it is not yet strong enough to tell us exactly how much risk is beneficial, or for whom.

F What seems clear is that the goal should not be the elimination of all risk, which is neither possible nor desirable. The aim, rather, should be to make play as safe as necessary – not as safe as possible – and to trust children, a little more than we currently do, to learn from the bumps along the way.

🧩 3. Ngôn ngữ trọng tâm – 10 phút: tác giả rào đón “vừa đủ” thế nào?

Câu trong bài Từ rào đón Vì sao vừa đủ
Part of the answer may lie in… may + part of nguyên nhân có thể có, không phải duy nhất
…may, it is argued, be better prepared… may + it is argued tường thuật ý người khác, chưa chứng minh
Teachers… often report… often + report dữ liệu từ quan sát, không phải nghiên cứu
What seems clear is that… seems kết luận của tác giả, mạnh nhưng không tuyệt đối

👉 Mỗi câu chỉ một lớp rào đón, chọn theo loại bằng chứng: quan sát → often report; lập luận của người khác → it is argued; kết luận riêng → it seems.

✍️ 4. Thực hành – 20 phút

💼 Dùng ngay – giải thích chính sách “an toàn vừa đủ” (thêm 5 phút)

Viết 4 câu gửi phụ huynh hoặc đồng nghiệp giải thích một hoạt động có chút rủi ro được kiểm soát (tình huống tự chọn): lợi ích → rủi ro đã nhận diện → biện pháp → người liên hệ.
