Overall, although the total number of accidents remained unchanged at 230,000, falls, which were by far the most common cause, became even more dominant. Older people accounted for the majority of these falls.
Falls rose from 120,000 to 135,000 over the decade, and poisoning also increased slightly, from 15,000 to 18,000. These rises, however, were offset by declines in all the other categories: cuts fell from 45,000 to 38,000, burns from 30,000 to 22,000, and other accidents from 20,000 to 17,000.
The bar chart reveals that falls in 2026 were heavily concentrated among the oldest group. People aged 65 and over suffered 80,000 falls, almost three-fifths of the total and well over twice the number recorded for those aged 15 to 64 (30,000). Children under 15 accounted for the smallest number, at 25,000.

Dear Mr Dao,
I am a resident of flat 4B and am writing to report a problem in the east stairwell, which I believe could lead to an accident if it is not dealt with soon.
For approximately two weeks, two of the three lights between the third and fourth floors have not been working, so that part of the staircase is very dimly lit in the evenings. In addition, the handrail on the same flight has become loose at the top and moves noticeably when weight is put on it.
The combination of these two problems is particularly concerning. Several elderly residents use these stairs every day, and parents often carry young children up them. Anyone who missed a step in the dark and reached for the handrail would find that it offered little support.
I would be grateful if both the lighting and the handrail could be repaired by the end of next week. In the meantime, could a temporary warning sign be placed at the top and bottom of the stairs?
