- Agent
- Hillside Cottages, how can I help?
- Caller
- Hello, I'd like to book one of your cottages for a week in April.
- Agent
- Certainly. Can I take your name?
- Caller
- It's Andrew Mallory – that's M-A-double L-O-R-Y.
- Agent
- Thank you. And how many people will be staying?
- Caller
- Four adults and one child. Originally it was going to be six of us, but my brother can't come now.
- Agent
- So five in total. For five, I'd recommend Oak Cottage rather than Willow – Willow only sleeps four. Oak has three bedrooms.
- Caller
- Oak sounds good. We'd like to arrive on the eleventh.
- Agent
- The eleventh of April is a Sunday. Our changeover day is Saturday, I'm afraid, so you'd need to arrive on the tenth or the seventeenth.
- Caller
- The tenth, then.
- Agent
- The price for that week is six hundred and forty pounds. There's also a refundable deposit of a hundred pounds for any damage.
- Caller
- That's fine. Is there parking?
- Agent
- Yes, space for two cars. And there's a small garden at the back, with a barbecue.
- Caller
- Are dogs allowed? We'd like to bring ours.
- Agent
- In Oak Cottage, yes, one dog, but not upstairs. There's an extra charge of thirty pounds for the week.
- Caller
- Great. And is the nearest shop far?
- Agent
- There's a village shop about half a mile away, which is open every day except Wednesday.

A local radio presenter describes a city's new bike-share scheme (giả định)
Nghe tối đa 2 lần trước khi xem lời thoại.
📄 Xem lời thoại (sau khi làm bài)
- Presenter
- Good morning. Today I'm going to tell you about the city's new bike-share scheme, which opens next month after a trial in the university district last year.
- Presenter
- There will be forty docking stations at first, mainly in the centre, with more planned for the suburbs if demand is high enough. Around a quarter of the bikes will be electric, which should help on the steep streets near the old town.
- Presenter
- To use the scheme, you'll need to register through the app or at one of the machines at larger stations. Registration is free, but you'll pay per ride: the first thirty minutes cost one pound, and after that it's fifty pence for every additional fifteen minutes. Electric bikes cost a little more.
- Presenter
- During the trial, the most common complaint was that stations near the railway station were often empty in the morning. To deal with this, the operator now uses vans to move bikes from quieter stations before the rush hour.
- Presenter
- Helmets aren't provided, and they aren't compulsory, but the council strongly recommends them. And one change that surprised some trial users: bikes must now be returned to a docking station – you can't simply leave them on the pavement any more.
- Presenter
- The scheme will run all year round, but stations in the parks will close at sunset.

Two students, Mia and Joel, discuss their research project on sleep and screen use with their tutor (giả định)
Nghe tối đa 2 lần trước khi xem lời thoại.
📄 Xem lời thoại (sau khi làm bài)
- Tutor
- So, how's the project on screen use and sleep going?
- Mia
- Quite well, I think. We've collected sleep diaries from sixty students over two weeks. We'd hoped for a hundred, but a lot of people dropped out after the first few days.
- Tutor
- That's very common with diary studies. What have you found so far?
- Joel
- The main pattern is that people who used their phones in bed reported falling asleep later. But I'm cautious about saying the phone causes it.
- Mia
- Me too. It could easily be the other way round – people who can't sleep pick up their phones.
- Tutor
- Good. So how will you deal with that in your report?
- Joel
- We'll describe it as an association, not a cause, and suggest an experiment as further research.
- Tutor
- And your method section?
- Mia
- I think it's the weakest part. We relied entirely on self-reported times, and people aren't very accurate about when they fell asleep.
- Joel
- I'm less worried about that, actually. Everyone was inaccurate in the same way, so the comparison between groups still holds.
- Tutor
- That's a reasonable argument, but you should still mention the limitation. What about the presentation?
- Mia
- I'll do the results. Joel's better with the charts, so he'll prepare those.
- Joel
- And we'll both write the conclusion. We still disagree slightly about how strong it should be.
- Tutor
- That disagreement might be worth mentioning in the discussion, actually. When's your deadline?
- Mia
- The draft is due on the twelfth, and the final version on the twenty-sixth.

A lecture on urban heat islands (giả định)
Nghe tối đa 2 lần trước khi xem lời thoại.
📄 Xem lời thoại (sau khi làm bài)
- Lecturer
- Today's topic is the urban heat island – the tendency for cities to be warmer than the surrounding countryside, particularly at night.
- Lecturer
- The main cause is the materials cities are made of. Asphalt, concrete and brick absorb heat during the day and release it slowly after sunset, which is why the difference is usually greatest at night rather than in the afternoon.
- Lecturer
- A second factor is the lack of vegetation. Plants cool their surroundings through evaporation, and they also provide shade. When green spaces are replaced by buildings and roads, both of these effects are lost.
- Lecturer
- The shape of the city matters too. Tall buildings close together can trap heat and reduce the movement of air – an effect sometimes described as a canyon. And of course, cars, air-conditioning units and factories all release waste heat directly.
- Lecturer
- Why does this matter? Higher night-time temperatures can make it harder for people to recover from hot days, which is a particular concern for older people. Energy use also rises, as more buildings are cooled, which in turn produces more waste heat – a kind of feedback loop.
- Lecturer
- Several responses are being tried. Light-coloured or reflective roofs reduce the heat absorbed by buildings. Street trees and parks provide shade and cooling. Some cities are also experimenting with permeable paving, which allows water to soak into the ground and evaporate later.
- Lecturer
- No single measure is enough, and their effects vary with local climate. But together they appear to make a measurable difference, and many of them – trees especially – bring other benefits as well.
