The line graph shows how household waste in Country W was dealt with between 2006 and 2026, comparing the shares that were recycled, sent to landfill and burnt to generate energy.
Overall, there was a fundamental shift away from landfill, which went from being by far the most common method to the least common. Both recycling and burning for energy grew steadily, with recycling becoming the main method of disposal.
In 2006, landfill accounted for 70% of household waste, while only 20% was recycled and 10% burnt. The share sent to landfill then fell sharply and continuously, to 33% in 2021 and just 25% by 2026, roughly a third of its original level.
Recycling rose throughout the period, overtaking landfill by 2021 and reaching 45% in the final year, more than double its 2006 figure. The proportion burnt for energy tripled, from 10% to 30%, and by 2026 it had also overtaken landfill, which ended the period as the least used of the three methods.

I am writing because I am applying for a part-time postgraduate certificate in urban planning, which starts in February. Since leaving university, I have worked as an assistant in a transport consultancy, and I have become increasingly interested in how data can inform planning decisions. The course would allow me to develop the technical skills I need to take on more responsibility at work.
I would be very grateful if you would be willing to act as one of my referees. The university asks for a short letter, of no more than one page, commenting on my analytical ability and my suitability for postgraduate study.
