A Ten years ago, Mai rarely bought anything second-hand. “I thought old clothes were only for people who couldn’t afford new ones,” she says. Today, the 29-year-old marketing assistant buys most of her clothes from second-hand shops and online selling groups, and she is not alone. In her city, several new second-hand shops have opened in the past few years.
B For many young shoppers, the main reason is price. A good-quality jacket that costs a lot in a department store may sell for a small part of that price in a second-hand shop. “You can find real bargains,” Mai explains. “Last month I bought a wool coat that looked almost new for less than the cost of a cinema ticket.”
C Other customers are more interested in the environment. Making new clothes uses a lot of water and energy, and many clothes are thrown away after being worn only a few times. Buying second-hand allows people to use these clothes for longer, so fewer new items need to be produced.
D However, second-hand shopping is not always easy. The sizes and styles in a shop change every week, so customers may need to visit several times before they find something that fits. It can also be difficult to check the condition of clothes sold online, and some buyers have received items that were damaged or dirty.
E Some shop owners have found ways to solve these problems. Hoa, who runs a small second-hand shop near a university, checks and washes every item before it goes on sale. She also posts photos of new items on social media every evening, so regular customers know when to come in.
F Hoa believes the trend will continue to grow. “In the future, I think buying second-hand will be completely normal,” she says. “Many large fashion companies have already started to sell used clothes as well as new ones.”
