A Three years ago, the city of Westport tried an experiment. On the first Sunday of every month, cars were not allowed in the old town centre from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Instead, the streets were opened to walkers, cyclists and families with children.
B At first, many people were against the idea. Shop owners were worried that customers would not be able to reach them, and some residents complained that they could not drive to visit their relatives. “We received hundreds of angry emails in the first month,” says Lan Pham, who manages the project for the city council.
C However, opinions slowly changed. On car-free days, the streets became much quieter, and people noticed that the air felt cleaner. Families started to bring bicycles and picnics, and street musicians began to perform in the main square. Several cafés put tables outside, and some of them reported that they were busier than on normal Sundays.
D After one year, the council carried out a survey. Most residents said they wanted the car-free days to continue, and many asked for them to happen more often. As a result, the city now closes the centre to cars every Sunday, not just once a month.
E The project has not solved every problem. Traffic on the roads around the centre is heavier on Sundays, and delivery companies have had to change their schedules. Lan believes the next step is to improve public transport, so that people can travel into the centre easily without a car.
