A When Quang and his wife planned their first trip to Europe, they wanted to see as much as possible. Their itinerary included seven cities in ten days. “We spent more time on trains and in airports than in museums,” Quang remembers. “When we got home, we were exhausted, and I could hardly remember which photo was taken where.”
B For their next holiday, they tried something different, an approach that is sometimes called “slow travel”. Instead of visiting many destinations, they stayed in one small town in the north of Italy for two weeks. They rented a flat rather than a hotel room, bought food at the local market and cooked most of their meals themselves.
C Supporters of slow travel say that it allows tourists to understand a place more deeply. Quang agrees. By the end of the second week, the owner of a small café knew their names, and a neighbour had taught them how to make fresh pasta. “We didn’t see any famous sights in the first few days,” he says, “but we felt like part of the town.”
D Slow travel can also be cheaper. Renting a flat for two weeks often costs less per night than a hotel, and cooking at home saves money on restaurants. Travelling less also means spending less on transport. However, Quang admits that this style of holiday is not for everyone. “If you only have a few days, or you love big cities, it might feel boring,” he says.
E Since that trip, the couple have travelled slowly in Thailand and Japan, and they now share tips on a travel blog. Their advice to beginners is to choose a place with good public transport, so that they can take short day trips without needing a car.
