Keeping cities cool
(Bài đọc tự viết; nhân vật và thành phố là giả định.)
A Summers in many large cities are becoming harder to bear. Streets, buildings and car parks absorb heat during the day and release it at night, so city centres often stay warmer than the countryside around them. In the city of Port Laval, the council recently asked several experts how this problem could be reduced.
B Dr Anna Weber, who studies city planning, believes the simplest answer is to plant more trees. “A street with tall trees is noticeably cooler than one without them, because trees give shade and release water into the air,” she says. However, she points out that trees take many years to grow, so cities need to start planting now.
C Engineer Tomas Ruiz suggests a quicker solution: painting roofs white. Dark roofs absorb sunlight, while light-coloured surfaces reflect much of it back into the sky. “It is cheap, and a building owner can do it in a weekend,” he explains. He also suggests using light-coloured materials for new roads and pavements.
D Not everyone is so positive. Mei Lin, who manages several apartment buildings, warns that some of these ideas may be difficult in practice. “Old buildings were not designed to carry heavy gardens on their roofs,” she says. She also points out that trees need regular care, and that someone must pay for this.
E Dr Weber agrees that green roofs – roofs covered with grass and plants – are not suitable for every building. But she believes that they are a good choice for new schools and offices, because they keep the rooms below cooler and can collect rainwater.
F Finally, Sam Okafor, a local resident, says the council should ask people what they need. “In my street, there is no shade at the bus stop, and older people have to wait in the sun,” he says. “Small changes like that would make a big difference to our daily lives.”
