A At Northbridge Design, a small company with forty employees, managers noticed a problem last year. Staff were receiving so many messages and notifications on their phones and computers that they found it hard to concentrate on long tasks. “People were checking their messages every few minutes,” says Thao, the office manager. “By the end of the day, they felt busy but had not finished their most important work.”
B The company decided to try a simple experiment. For two hours every morning, from 9 to 11, all chat notifications were switched off, and staff were asked to put their phones in a drawer. During this “focus time”, people could only be contacted in an emergency.
C At first, some employees found it uncomfortable. Younger staff in particular said they felt anxious when they could not check their phones. However, after a few weeks, most of them said that they were able to finish difficult tasks more quickly, and many reported feeling less tired in the afternoon.
D Not every team found the experiment easy. The customer service team, which has to answer clients quickly, could not stop checking messages completely. Instead, they took turns: one person answered urgent messages while the others focused on other work.
E After six months, Northbridge made focus time a permanent part of the working day. Thao believes the main lesson is that technology itself is not the problem. “Phones and chat apps are useful tools,” she says. “The problem is when we let them decide how we spend our time.”

- Nói 1 phút: nơi làm việc của bạn có quá nhiều tin nhắn không? Bạn làm gì để tập trung? (5 phút).
