The river robot

A Every day, plastic bottles, bags and food containers are carried down rivers and eventually into the sea. In 2021, Minh Chau, a young engineer, watched a group of volunteers in her hometown pulling rubbish out of the river by hand. “They worked all morning, and the next day the river looked exactly the same,” she remembers. That was when she decided to build a machine that could do the job continuously.
B Her first prototype was simple: a floating platform with a moving belt that lifted rubbish out of the water and dropped it into a large basket. It was powered by solar panels, so it needed no fuel. However, the early version had a serious problem. The belt also caught small fish, which was the opposite of what Chau wanted to achieve.
C To solve this, Chau worked with a biologist from a local university. Together they redesigned the belt with wider gaps and added a slow-moving “gate” at the front that gently guided fish away. In a three-month trial, the new design collected several tonnes of rubbish, and volunteers who monitored the machine found no injured fish.
D The project soon attracted attention. A city council agreed to pay for two more robots, and a technology company offered free software that allows the robots to send information about the type and amount of rubbish they collect. This data has turned out to be very useful, because it shows which products are most often thrown into the river.
E Not everyone is convinced, however. Some environmental groups argue that the robots deal only with the result of the problem, not its cause. “Machines in the river are useful,” says one campaigner, “but the real solution is for people to produce and throw away less plastic.” Chau agrees, and she now shares her data with schools and local businesses to encourage them to reduce waste.
F Chau’s team is currently developing a smaller, cheaper model that could be used in narrow canals. She hopes that within a few years, small towns will be able to buy and maintain their own robots without help from large companies.
