The line graph shows the proportions of new cars sold in Country K that were powered by petrol or diesel and by electricity in 2020 and 2025, together with forecasts for 2030 and 2035.
Overall, petrol and diesel cars have dominated sales so far, but their share has been falling, while electric cars have become increasingly popular. Electric vehicles are expected to overtake traditional cars by the end of the period.
In 2020, petrol and diesel cars accounted for 90% of all new car sales, whereas electric cars made up only 5%. Five years later, the figure for traditional cars had fallen to 70%, and the share of electric cars had quadrupled to 20%.
According to the forecasts, these trends are likely to continue. Petrol and diesel cars are predicted to fall to 50% of sales in 2030 and just 35% in 2035. In contrast, electric cars are expected to reach 40% in 2030 and 60% in 2035, overtaking traditional cars at some point between those two years.
