A In a recent staff survey at Delta Logistics, a medium-sized transport company, almost every department reported the same complaint: people felt exhausted by mid-afternoon. Managers had assumed that tiredness was simply part of modern working life, but the survey suggested that it was affecting accuracy and safety, particularly among drivers and warehouse staff.
B The company’s health adviser, Ms Ngoc, looked more closely at the results. She found that the most tired employees were not necessarily those who worked the longest hours. Instead, they were people whose shifts changed frequently – for example, working mornings one week and nights the next. Their bodies, she explained, never had the chance to settle into a regular pattern of sleep.
C Other causes were less obvious. Many office workers said they ate lunch at their desks while answering emails, so they never had a real break. Others reported checking work messages late at night, which made it harder to relax before bed. In both cases, the problem was not the workload itself, but the lack of time away from it.
D Based on these findings, Delta introduced several changes. Shift patterns were made more predictable, with staff told their schedules a month in advance. Office workers were encouraged to take a full lunch break away from their screens, and managers agreed not to send non-urgent messages after 7 p.m.
E Six months later, a second survey showed a clear improvement. Fewer employees described themselves as “very tired”, and the number of minor errors in the warehouse fell. Interestingly, staff also reported feeling more positive about the company, because they felt that their concerns had been taken seriously.
F Not every problem has been solved, however. Some drivers still have to work irregular hours because of customer demand, and a few managers find it difficult to stop sending evening emails. Ms Ngoc believes the next step is to give employees more choice over their own schedules, where this is possible.
