Is changing jobs often a bad thing?

(Bài đọc tự viết; các chuyên gia là giả định.)

A A generation ago, many people stayed with one employer for most of their working lives. Today, it is common for young professionals to change jobs every two or three years. Some managers see this “job-hopping” as a sign of disloyalty. But is it really a problem?

B Recruitment consultant Sarah Kim believes that the answer depends on the reason for each move. “If someone changes jobs every year without learning anything new, that is a warning sign,” she says. “But a person who moves to gain new skills or responsibilities can be very attractive to employers.” She adds that candidates should be ready to explain each move clearly in an interview.

C Economist Dr Paul Mensah takes a broader view. He argues that frequent job changes are partly a response to the way companies now behave. “Firms rarely promise lifelong employment any more,” he points out, “so it is unreasonable to expect workers to show lifelong loyalty.” He also notes that changing employers is often the quickest way to achieve a significant pay rise.

D Not everyone is so positive. Linh Tran, who manages a team of software engineers, says that people who leave quickly often do so just as they are becoming really useful. “It takes about a year for a new engineer to understand our systems properly,” she explains. “If they leave after eighteen months, we have lost most of the value of training them.”

E Career coach James Hart rejects the idea that staying in one job is always the safe choice. In his experience, people who remain with the same company for many years sometimes find it difficult to adapt if they lose their job unexpectedly. However, he agrees with Linh Tran that very short stays can make it hard to show real achievements. His advice is to stay long enough in each role to complete at least one significant project.

F Sarah Kim makes a final point: what matters most to recruiters is not the number of jobs on a CV, but the story it tells. “A clear direction – for example, moving from sales to marketing to management – is much more convincing than a random list of positions.”
