The diagram illustrates the process by which used glass bottles are recycled to make new ones.
Overall, there are eight stages in the process, beginning with the collection of used bottles and ending with the sale of new bottles. The process is cyclical, since the new bottles can be collected and recycled again.
At the first stage, used bottles are collected from recycling bins and transported by truck to a recycling plant. There, they are sorted according to their colour – usually green, brown and clear glass – before being washed and having their labels removed. The clean bottles are then crushed into small pieces.
In the next stage, the crushed glass is mixed with sand and melted in a furnace at a temperature of around 1,500 degrees Celsius. The liquid glass is then poured into moulds to make new bottles. Finally, these bottles are filled with drinks and sold in shops, after which the cycle begins again once they have been used.
