Learning beyond the classroom walls
(Bài đọc tự viết; trường, nhân vật và chương trình là giả định.)
A For most of the last century, school learning took place almost entirely indoors. Pupils sat in rows, listened to the teacher and copied from the board. In recent years, however, a growing number of schools have started to take lessons outside – into school gardens, local parks and even city streets. Supporters call this “outdoor learning”, and they believe it can make subjects such as science and geography more meaningful.
B At Hillside Primary School, a pilot scheme began three years ago. Once a week, each class spends a morning in the school garden, where pupils measure plant growth, record the weather and look for insects. The head teacher, Mrs Karen Doyle, says that the change was most noticeable among pupils who found classroom work difficult. “Some children who rarely spoke in class became leaders outside,” she explains. “Hands-on activities gave them a different way to succeed.”
C Teachers also report benefits for concentration. After a morning outside, many pupils seem calmer and more focused in their afternoon lessons. However, Mrs Doyle admits that this is based on teachers’ observations rather than careful measurement, and she would like a university to study the scheme properly.
D Not everyone is convinced. Some parents worry that time spent outdoors is time taken away from reading and mathematics, which are tested in national exams. A father at another school complained that his son “spent a whole afternoon looking at leaves” when he should have been practising for a test. Critics also argue that outdoor lessons depend heavily on the weather and on the skills of individual teachers.
E There are practical difficulties too. Taking thirty children to a park requires extra adults, consent forms from parents and a careful risk assessment. Schools in city centres may not have any green space nearby. For this reason, some schools have created small gardens on rooftops or in car parks, while others organise fieldwork trips only once or twice a term.
F Perhaps the biggest challenge is how to assess what pupils learn outside. Traditional tests are good at measuring facts, but less good at measuring skills such as teamwork or observation. Some educators argue that the curriculum is too rigid and should give teachers more freedom; others believe that clear standards are necessary to make sure that all children learn the basics.
