The chart compares the number of adults in Country M who enrolled in short online courses with the number who completed them, every two years from 2016 to 2026.
Overall, both enrolments and completions increased over the period. However, enrolments grew much faster, so the gap between the two figures widened considerably and the proportion of learners who finished their course fell.
In 2016, 40,000 adults enrolled in short online courses. This figure rose steadily to 55,000 in 2018 before jumping to 90,000 in 2020, the biggest increase in the period. Enrolments continued to climb, reaching 170,000 in 2026, more than four times the original figure.
The number of completions also rose, but at a slower rate, from 22,000 in 2016 to 72,000 in 2026. As a result, while just over half of enrolled learners completed their course in 2016, this proportion had dropped to roughly 42% by the end of the period.
