People have different views about what universities are for. While some argue that their main role is to prepare young people for work, others believe that higher education should offer knowledge for its own sake. In my opinion, universities should do both, but developing knowledge and thinking skills is more important in the long term.
On the one hand, there are strong reasons why universities should prepare students for the job market. Most students and their families spend a great deal of money on tuition fees and living costs, so it is natural that they expect a return on this investment in the form of a good job. Courses that include work placements or practical projects can improve graduates' employability. For example, an engineering student who has completed an internship will usually find it easier to get a job than one who has only studied theory.
On the other hand, I believe that university should be more than job training. Specific technical skills often become outdated quickly, especially in fields such as technology. By contrast, the ability to think critically, analyse evidence and communicate ideas clearly is useful in any career and in everyday life. Subjects such as history or philosophy may not lead directly to a particular job, but they broaden students' horizons and help them understand the world. Furthermore, many important discoveries have come from research that had no obvious practical purpose at the time.
In conclusion, although universities should help students to find employment, I believe their most important role is to develop knowledge and thinking skills that will benefit graduates throughout their lives.
