Overall, helping neighbours was the most common type of volunteering for all groups except the youngest, and people aged 65 and over had the highest participation rates in two of the three activities. By contrast, environmental work was most popular among young adults.
The percentage of people who helped their neighbours rose with age, from 15% of 18–29-year-olds to 32% of those aged 65 and over, which was the highest figure in the table. Community events attracted a quarter of the oldest group and 22% of the youngest, while the two middle groups had lower rates, at 15% and 18%.
Environmental work showed the opposite pattern. Young adults were the most likely to do this kind of volunteering (18%), three times the proportion of people aged 65 and over (6%). Among the two middle age groups, the figures were only 8% and 10% respectively.

I am writing to report an urgent safety problem in Block B, where I live on the twelfth floor.
Since last Monday, the lights on the emergency staircase between the eighth and fourteenth floors have not been working. In addition, the door to the staircase on the tenth floor has been blocked by several large boxes, which appear to have been left there by a resident who is moving.
This is a serious hazard. If there were a fire or a power cut, residents would need to use these stairs in the dark, and the blocked door could prevent people from escaping. It is particularly dangerous for elderly residents and families with young children.
I reported the broken lights to the reception desk on Tuesday, but so far nothing has been done. I would therefore ask you to repair the lights and remove the boxes as soon as possible, and ideally by the end of this week. It would also be helpful to remind all residents that emergency exits must be kept clear.
